MEANING 1 Application (Blog) Exercise

Representational:

This shows a representational form of a bird. It is a picture of a real bird on a tree branch with fine details. We know that this is a bird because everyone has an experience of seeing a bird in real life. Since it is a direct photography of a real bird, we can recognize it based on this prior experience. We can also identify it by looking at the environment such as tree branches, leaves, and forest. The specific type of a bird may be known by the viewer based on the visual characteristics represented in the picture if one has a prior knowledge of this type of a bird.

Abstract:

This is an abstract form of a bird. It is abstract because it is a distilled version of a bird image that shows all the attributes of a bird in its simplest form. The image is produced with curvy lines and dots that signify simple yet sophisticated form of the bird. The curvy lines are most pronounced in the tail and the eyelash of the bird, which show the kinesthetic yet graceful quality of those parts. The dots add onto its elegance by making it look like it is sparkling. The artist is trying to show the beauty of the bird.

Symbolic:

This picture denotes a flying bird by resemblance. One would know this by referring to their experience and memory of a flying bird. The characteristics of this image are simple shapes with straight edges and these shapes are combined together to resemble a bird image. The smallest angle of the bottom triangle symbolizes the pointy peak of a bird. The top two polygons are put together in an angle in order to signify the bent wing, which also symbolizes a bird flying. This image is a symbol because it simplifies the idea of a flying bird yet it is still recognizable.
